PPT-240 Return Path Issues in High Speed Serial Interconnects

PPT-240 Return Path Issues in High Speed Serial Interconnects

The return path is just as important as the signal path for single-ended signals. But what about for differential signals? Afterall, one advantage of differential signaling is being more robust to return path discontinuities. In this paper, we explore two common return path problems: gaps and a lack of return vias. We show by measurement and simulation the impact these discontinuities can have on high speed serial links above 8 Gbps.
